Gillman Barracks! A sneak peek!

Snip, snip, snip. Ladies and gents, Gillman Barracks.

Yes, the highly, highly anticipated arts enclave opens to the public this weekend, where visitors will be treated not just to the showcase of the first 13 galleries to open shop and to the opening exhibition curated by Eugene Tan (a.k.a. the main dude handling this massive EDB project), but to talks by a host of artists and curators like Christian Thompson, Zhang Enli, David Elliot, Hou Hanru and Charles Merewether.

And finally, one more news tidbit concerning the Centre For Contemporary Art. It’s set to open in the second half of 2013 but “operational” by January—in time for Art Stage Singapore, obviously. And spearheading it will be, drumroll please… Nanyang Technological University.

As for the CCA’s International Artist Residency Programme, when it’s up and running, you can have around 20 artists a year (with around nine residing concurrently).

Interesting how it’ll pan out, this relationship between a non-commercial centre like CCA and its commercial-minded neighbours.

Gillman Barracks our very own 798?! FOST Gallery dives in!

Commercial galleries selling contemporary art, an arts centre, artists living and working within the premises — could Gillman Barracks be Singapore’s mini-version of Bejing’s 798 art district?

More details were released this afternoon regarding the much talked about project by the troika of the Economic Development Board, JTC Corporation and the National Arts Council.

That’s an artist’s impression of one of the buildings. And here’s what we know so far.
