And your Singapore Idol is… Sezairi!!!
IT WAS one heck of a night, not just for Sezairi Sezali, who was voted winner of this year’s Singapore Idol, but also for me, because I predicted that he’d win.

Yup, the 22—year—old, who is waiting to enlist for National Service, doesn’t just get the honour of being the latest Singapore Idol, but he’s also got an artiste management deal with MediaCorp, a cool Gibson guitar (a cherry red ES335 – his favourite guitar) and a record deal with Universal Music.
Which means you’ll get to hear more from the dude. If the army doesn’t keep him in its clutches, that is. “We’ll probably try to work around it somehow,” he said after the win.
If people were expecting a female Idol this year, they only had to watch the reaction from the 8,000-strong crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to realise it wasn’t going to happen. Sorry, Sylvia, I really do love your voice, but it was purty obvious it was going to be Sezairi’s night.
He still looked a little shell-shocked an hour after the news, but apparently, he didcelebrate with a Ribena. “Someone gave it to me, I think he saw the video you did,” he said. (See http://www.youtube.com/user/todayonlinesg#p/u/6/gf0Pl-U9uzM)
And what about Sylvia Ratonel, his competition?

Well, 2010 will be a year of learning. “I really want to learn how to play the piano,” she said, citing her idol Alicia Keys as an influence, and adding that she wouldn’t mind a career in music. She also would like to improve her Tagalog and visit The Philippines.
Well, we’ll be waiting to see what will come out of that!

well, you cant imagine how loud i yelled (scream of joy) when gurmit annouced the next spore idol. both sezairi and sylvia are awesome, in their own ways. he’s style is more to cool n funky. while she is more to a diva. so to me, both sezairi n sylvia has the potential. is jus dat spore chose hes style. congrats sezairi!!
Congrats Sezairi.. I also predicted that u won..
SYLVIA DONT GIVE UP ! I Support You !!
Though i spent lots of money to vote for sylvia, big congrates to Sezairi. Heard lots of racist comments esp abt the title shd be malay/suria idol. I am a malay but yet i voted for sylvia. If the chinese wants other than malays to win, then they shd fork up their money to vote for sylvia. Futhermore, they are the majorities..we are only minorities! GO SYLVIA!
I was routing for Sylvia all the way until she performed the last two songs…… Sezairi, on the other hand, blasted his way for my votes…….as he outperformed Sylvia in his last two songs.
way to go Sezairi.
hi dude whst’s UP
If there ever was a SG Idol for hosts, Gurmit wouldn’t make it through the auditions.
lets not make this a Malay vs others vce versa. Both are good, i thot that silvia cud win, but based on the performance last nite, sezairi did better esp the last song…it moved many people. The judges I believe had wanted Sylvia to win (look at thier comments, read in between the lines, they really had wtd Slivia to win. Esp Dick Lee, while he was applauded Sezairi last performance, he stop short of saying tt Sezairi cud be the next idol…cheh..sudah lah Dick….! Lain judges pun sama jgk. Anyway, i agree, if whoever wants Sylivia to win, then let the fingers do the talking lah
To me Singapore talents won the nite!;)
To unhappiness voters,
Idol system is fine, judge and vote. For Singapore Idol, it’s proven; Taufik Batisah become a productive singer and Hady Mirza even more become Asia Idol. Imagine Hady gained voters from other country like Malaysia, Indonesia, India etc, that was a big deal.
Still unhappy? It’s fair game and it shows that Malays has talent base for this industry and already upgrade Singapore level as Asian Idol origin, you see that?
Pressure on these 3 persons, on how to be a real “Idol”, especially for Hady Mirza, that’s hard work to do. Sezairi, what next?
waz up singapore? are u really proud of sezairi being ur national IDOL? U Sezairi fans, have u really watch the show? He cannot sing! His fashion sense is very lousy, I wouldnt even go out wearing that “thing” he wear when he sang with Hady. It’s not about race…it’s about TALENT! It’s not popularity contest…it’s a SINGING CONTEST! It is what it is! HE is your IDOL…LIVE with it!
I am a fan of both Sylvia and Sezairi.
Apart from having a really good voice and good looks, I really took to Sylvia’s humble background, sincerity and very clear desire to win. I was a Sylvia supporter throughout the competition.
However, it was always clear to me that Sezairi was tangibly the better musician and arguably the better singer. His laid back approach did him some disservice in a competition like this – especially when it culminates in a song engineered for a main stream commercial release with a woman singer in mind such as Touched By An Angel. All things considered, he did a more than credible job.
I still hope that Sylvia will release an album. I will certainly buy it.
I am looking forward to Sezairi’s album. Good material will be critical. Unfortunately it may have to include Touched By An Angel I suppose, but maybe he can rearrange it and do an unplugged funk version.
Sezairi, if you ever get to read this, congartulations, you deserve to win. Please, please do not let them over engineer and over produce your sound like they did for Taufik, and for that matter Kris Allen and Bo Bice. If it don’t got soul, it don’t got nothin’.
Now, because race plays a part in the voting patterns doesn’t mean Singapore is a racist country. In fact, it is because most Singaporeans aren’t racist that the Malay dudes keep winning.
I suspect that if only 1 of the finalists is a Malay, then he or she automatically gets almost all the support of the Malay followers of Singapore Idol.
The Malays think of themselves as the minority, thus they tend to support each other more.
So, when the Malay community sees a young Malay lad, they start thinking,
“We got to support our bro.”
“We got to support this boy, almost like our son.”
“We got to support this boy, he is one of us.”
Because Malays see themselves as the minority race in Singapore, the effect of this “let’s help one of our own reach his dreams” effect is stronger than in the Chinese community under normal conditions.
So what happens is that as the non-Malay finalist, you really only can fight for the non-Malay votes. For this discussion, let’s focus on the Singaporean Chinese – the majority. Since both finalists won’t have much to differentiate themselves, then the Chinese votes get split down the middle.
Thus, all Sezairi has to do is to stick around and avoid elimination until all the other malays are gone. This allows him to have maximum support of the malay fan base.
So, since the Chinese votes get split, and the Mendaki effect is in play, it is almost inevitable that the cool Malay dude will always win if he is the only cool Malay dude in the final.
Majority of the Audiences & Voters were Malay gals >.< thats why we got a winning streak of 3Malay Guy Idols LOL
To me it doesn’t matter, both of the contestants did a very awesome job. I am quite disappointed with all the bad comments. Taufik , Hady and Sezairi are Singapore Idols and they are malays. So? Who voted for them if it is not Us Singaporeans. Both Sylvia and Sezairi did their best performances and we vote for them. Doesn’t matter Who Wins, both of them are SINGAPOREANS and we should be proud to have great local talents.
Please remove the racist thingy in your mind.
Charice won my heart…
Race! Race! Race!
DD.
Change the theme..
Singapore Malay Idols. (Javanese, Boyanese etc,)
Singapore Chinese Idols. (Mandarin, Hokkien, Teochew etc)
Singapore Indians (Malayalam, Punjabi, Hidustani etc.
Singapore Foreign Workers Idols (Filipina/Filipino, Bangla, Myanmarese etc..).
Then the Champion of Champion Finale. for the various ethnics winners.
All must sing Majullah Singapura and Stand up for Singapore as compulsory songs.
Congrats.. Sezairi you are the official Singapore Idol 2009.
Well done Sylvia (my favourite Singapore Idol 2009)
Grow up Singapore!!!! Time to look beyond whatever creed you have ( sorry…I just hate to mention the word)
Tell the world, that we are different…
lol tok funny. sing national anthem..sure nt? later like someone sing lyrics wrongly how?? lol no offence ar joking only! u all gt sense of humor rite
Sezairi will just end up like the past winners, release an album or two, then fade into oblivion. The only way they can redeem themselves is to turn to acting or hosts.
Sylvia definitely is the clear winner in the eyes for Majority of Singaporeans, the only reason she didn’t win is because when it comes to voting, the other races can never win the Malays. That is why there are no Malays in Singapore’s Government sector.
Just like what Christopher Toh said, I would buy Sylvia’s album anytime, I can’t stand Sezairi’s horrid voice. Go watch the Singapore’s countdown party, Sylvia totally owned the song with her voice, Sezairi spoilt it with his horrible whines.
I don’t think Taufik nor Hady has faded into oblivion, by the way. They highly popular around the region, and they travel to Malaysia and Indonesia a lot. Also, they are also producing albums, Taufik in particular also works with other artistes. So they may not be in the public eye that much – at least over here.
Sezairi and Sylvia make a lovely couple ,i hope they cut the wedding cake one day
