Yes, the opening of another Relish outlet is another reason to rejoice. If only because I can’t argue the fact that chef-owner Willin Low’s burgers are both fun and oh-so-good to eat. From the traditional, honest to goodness quality beef, bacon and guacamole burgers to daring options the likes of Low’s Blue Cheese Beef Burger with Rucola, as well as quirky combos such as the Poached Pear & Walnut Butter, the paper-thin omelette-wrapped “Ram-Lee Burger”, the Soft-Boned Char-Siew Pork Open Foccacia Burger and the Curry Chicken Burger, what’s not to love?
Or course, there are also some reasonably relish-worthy pasta dishes and braises offered.
Oh, and when I said closer to home, I meant my home.
Having grown up in Serangoon Gardens, I’ve had to survive quite a few changes. And there have been quite a few. One of my favourite char kway teow stalls, Jeffrey Ho’s (who had taken over his father’s business) is now only part of the estate’s rich history. A sad reality to be sure, especially when one takes into account the fact that Jeffrey’s father began hawking his award-winning version of this Singapore classic more than 40 years ago. And there is now a new mall just across from where the stall used to be.
Back to Chef Low’s Relish new outlet, yes, it is currently under construction on the second floor of the newly opened My Village mini-mall in Serangoon Gardens central. About time, I think. Already owning a spot here are pop-eats Udders gourmet ice cream and Da Paolo Gastranomia (both on the ground level next to the DBS bank.)
(Coincidentally, its Bukit Timah outlet next to the Botanical Gardens, is also on the 2nd level … of a row of beautifully restored shop-houses built in 1928, that is. But that’s beside the point.)
Anyway, I was speaking with Low (Wild Rocket, Wild Oats, Relish, Burger Bench & Bar) just the other day over lunch – at the launch event for the Awakening the Appetite book he had contributed recipes to.
And, good news is that he is hopeful the Serangoon Gardens outpost will be up and running by end March (this year). Fingers crossed, I hope it’s sooner.
