Being a joyrider

Can someone tell me what that means?
Next to Duran Duran, Roxette’s lyrics – well, the early years, anyway – are about as comprehensible as er, you know. I mean, here’s a sample from the first verse of their big hit, The Look: “Walking like a man, hitting like a hammer, she’s a juvenile scam, never was a quitter, tasty like a raindrop…”
Further on in the song, they sing: “Fire in the ice, Naked to the t-bone, Is a lover’s disguise, banging on the head drum, Shaking like a mad bull”.
Seriously?

But all that didn’t matter when the duo came back to Singapore after – er, what’s 2012 minus 1995? – all that time. Sure, they looked a little more worn at the edges, but that Per Gessle doesn’t seem to stop, does he? He’s bouncing around like an Energizer bunny, chugging out the riffs and getting the crowd to sing along and all that rock star schtick.
Marie Fredricksson, on the other hand, was more static by comparison. I heard someone near me comment, “Wah, she lau liao, cannot move”.
Git.

The woman has survived a brain tumour! And because of that she’s blind in one eye. But does that stop her from giving her all? Heck, no! Sure, she didn’t hit those forceful ionospheric notes, but she did try for the upper regions of the troposphere. And she wasn’t going to let something like that disable her ability to have a good time.
And that, really, was what I liked about the show. That with these guys, there are no pretensions. They just wanna have fun. And I don’t know about you, but fun I did have, especially listening to the musicians riffing references from the likes of Abba’s Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Eric Clapton’s Layla, and they even did a snatch of that old local folkie, Singapura.
And apparently, I knew a lot more Roxette songs than I thought I did. And I thought it was a nice touch that they ended the show with a stripped-down version of Church Of Your Heart.
Of course, I still don’t understand what “the eyes of a lover that hit like heat” (from Dangerous) means, nor do I pretend to know what a joyrider is. And darn it, why didn’t Per break out his Rickenbackers?

But hey, does it matter?
Nah.

Besides, they played by favourite track, It Must Have Been Love. So there.

Anyhoot, for all you fans who want to remember the night, here are some shots that I managed to get with my dinky camera. Enjoy!

My favourite shot of the night
