Ronan Keating in Ice-TV’s Debut

BOYZONE fans are currently gushing about the new album, Brother, which features two tracks sung by the late Stephen Gately; but what’s making a lot my female (and some male) colleagues gush is new form of Ronan Keating as seen in on the cover of Attitude Active.

What’s also on his cards is being featured in a key role for content production company Ice-TV, which is currently in development for a new programme called Debut, a regional talent search for Asia’s next hot pop act. Yup, the Boyzone singer will host the show and play an integral role in mentoring the contestants.

“It’s basically a kind of Pop Idol show for all of Asia,” he told us. “It’s kind of going to be my show, I’m fronting it and I’m in the judging panel and we’re looking for some superstars from Asia. I’m not saying that I’m going to be like Simon Cowell, I’m going to be me, but that’s my role, should I say.”

But if you want to be selected, you’d better bring your game on. “You have to be serious about it. You have to work hard. It’s incredibly demanding. It’s not an easy job. So people have to be ready for it. I’m not going to pick somebody who’s half-hearted about it. If I’m going to give 120 per cent, somebody else better too!”

No news yet as to when the selection process, et al, starts, but the word is that it’ll be filmed and produced right here in Singapore. So Ronan fans, keep a lookout for this!

Stephen Gately, RIP

BAD NEWS for Boyzone fans. They’ll be one Boy short the next time you see them.

Just caught this off news wires today:

Stephen Gately, better known as the baby-faced member of Boyzone who sang lead on No Matter What, has died at the age of just 33.

The pop star and actor was holidaying on the Spanish island of Majorca when he died yesterday, the group’s official website confirmed.

The cause of his death is unclear but a close friend said he died after a night out. Louis Walsh, the manager of Boyzone and X Factor judge, said in a newspaper interview: ”We’re all absolutely devastated.”

He added: ”I’m in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don’t know much about what’s happened yet. ‘I only heard after The X Factor and we will rally around each other this week. He was a great man.”

The four remaining members of Boyzone are due to fly to Palma, the main city of Majorca. Shane Lynch, a band member, told the News Of The World: ”Me and the boys are flying out in the morning. ”We just need to get over to where he’s passed and work out what we need to do.”

An updated statement on Boyzone’s official website confirmed the Irish singer’s death.

It said: “We are truly sorry to confirm that Stephen tragically died yesterday whilst on holiday, with his partner Andrew, in Majorca. We are unable to give any other details at this time. Ronan, Keith, Mikey & Shane are devastated by the news and send their deepest sympathies to Stephen’s family and his many friends all over the world.”

I remember Stephen being the friendliest of the ‘Zone when they first came to Singapore all those years ago. He was always holding the doors open, helping out and all that. Real, nice polite chap, as they would say.

Oh well, at least you had your fun before you ran down the curtain and joined the choir invisible.
