The Bieber has landed!

A couple of hours ago, actually.

Here’s a pic of him swanning into the airport taken by intrepid photographer Aloysius Lim.

Who wants to own a radio station?

IF YOU’RE tired that radio doesn’t play your favourite songs – or your own songs, for that matter – or if you’re sick and tired of listening to Justin Biber or Rebecca Black, well take heart – you may not have to!

Yes, you can start broadcasting what you like if you take up the offer of operating one of two new radio frequencies.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) is conducting a three-month long public tender to allocate two FM frequencies – FM 89.3 and FM 92.0 – to operate commercial or not-for-profit radio stations in Singapore.

Yup, you could be a proud broadcaster playing all your favourite hits, whether it’s One Less Lonely Girl, Hey There Lonely Girl, Young Girl, Brown Eyed Girl or Who’s That Girl.

The tender follows an earlier ‘Expression of Interest’ (EOI) exercise conducted  by MDA in April 2010. More than 20 parties registered their interest at the close of the EOI exercise in May 2010.
Based on market interest, MDA now seeks formal proposals from interested parties to operate FM 89.3 and FM92.0. The three-month public tender exercise will close on 28 June 2011.
As part of the tender exercise, MDA welcomes new ideas and does not intend to limit the future station(s) to any particular genre, in order to encourage a variety of proposals. The tender also aims to encourage new players to enter the market as well as to provide more choices for listeners, resulting in a greater spread of local radio content for different segments of the population.
MDA will evaluate the bids submitted based on the following criteria:
• programming innovation, characteristics and quality;
• financial standing and business plan; and
• ability to produce and promote local content that aids the development of Singapore’s media industry.
In addition, for tenderers who intend to operate commercial radio stations, there would be a monetary bid component, while not-for-profit radio stations will be evaluated on the social impact of their offerings.
The tender is now posted on GeBiz, under ITT No. DA000ETT11000022.
Interested parties can submit their proposals according to the instructions in the tender before 4pm 28 June 2011.
Results of the tender will be made known by September 2011.

According to the Nielson Media Index, 93 per cent of the population aged 15 and above tuned in to radio in the past week. There are now 20 FM radio stations in Singapore.

So come on, don’t be shy – join the radio ga ga gang.

Green at the Grammys – what gives, dude?

It’s a sad day when someone like Ceelo Green has to resort to dressing up like a bird in order to trump another weird performance by Lady Gaga. Yup, the guy who gave us F*** You donned an outfit that looked like a cousin of the one worn by Bjork way back when, and treated the audience to a performance flanked by Muppets. Lady Gaga came out in a womb and the less said of that, the better.
All this for the sake of leaving a lasting impression in the minds of pop music fans – whom as we all know, currently have an artiste loyalty retention span of two goldfish. Okay three goldfish. Okay, okay, a whole tank full of goldfish.
At any rate, Green’s adoption of show over substance isn’t anything new. The Asian pop stars have been doing it for years, way before U2 went Zoo TV on us; way before Madonna wore lace over leather; way before Elton John thought oversized sunnies were cool.
According to Charlie Haden and Santana, people have lost the beauty of music. Perhaps they are right  – if this keeps up, pop music will no longer have a place in the arts as a format per se. Those set and costume designers though, will get an exhibition for their work.

Meanwhile in other good news, Esperanza Spalding beat the Biebster for the Best New Artiste Grammy. You go, girl!

Bieber and Lennon, in the same sentence!

Kids around the world have one really big thing in common when they’re searching for entertainment on the Internet.

No, not porn.

MUSIC.

According to Norton Online Family Kids’ top entertainment searches, based on more than 20 million anonymous search-engine queries from kids in 20 countries, the majority of entertainment searches kids conducted online (which made up more than 75 percent) were for songs or musicians.
But just who did they search for? Here’s the Top 25 (Note: parents might find the list interesting indeed):

1. Justin Bieber. Yes. Love him or hate him, the Beebster rules the online roost too.
2. John Lennon. No, really.
3. Lady Gaga. Expected.
4. Dynamite. No, not the explosive material based on nitroglycerin but the Taio Cruz song.
5. Waka Waka. Shakira!
6. Teenage Dream. Is made of Katy Perry.
7. Love The Way You Lie. Yes, the combo of Rihanna and Eminem is Internet fodder.
8. Katy Perry.
9. Airplanes. Again, not the actual flying machine, but B.o.B.’s ditty, yo.
10. Rihanna.
11. Shakira. Interestingly, her song ranks higher than Rihanna’s.
12. Selena Gomez.
13. Miley Cyrus.
Still.
14. Taylor Swift.
15. Just The Way You Are.
The Bruno Mars one, not Billy Joel.
16. We No Speak Americano.
17. Nein Mann
. Laserkraft 3D’s hit proves that Deustche ist gut, ja?
18. Akon. Wonder how many from Singapore asking why he cancelled his gig?
19. Idol 2010.
20. Panamericano. Probably in search of No 16.
21. Like A G6.
22. X Factor.
23. Sean Banan.
24. Ben 10.
The first cartoon character on the list!
25. David Guetta.

And here’s a note for parents: “Sometimes parents have blind spots about their kids’ rapidly evolving likes and interests, especially when it comes to how their kids spend time on the Internet,” said  Internet safety advocate and Consumer Business Head of Asia  at Symantec, Effendy Ibrahim in a statement.  “A free solution like Norton Online Family is a great tool to help parents continue a healthy dialogue with their kids about not only their favourite sources of entertainment, but also what constitutes safe behaviour online.”

Justin Bieber is just a doll. Really.

Apparently winning awards in the music field isn’t enough for Justin Bieber. Now, it appears that Justin Bieber dolls are up for awards as well. Yes, you read right.
The Justin Bieber Music Video Collection Singing Figures have been nominated for a 2011 TOTY (Toy of the Year) Award in the Girl Toy category. Not surprisingly, the Justin Bieber singing dolls, manufactured by The Bridge Direct through a partnership with Bravado, are “anticipated to be one of the hottest items for this holiday season”, said a report. Each doll sings a portion of one of Justin’s most popular hit songs – either Baby or One Less Lonely Girl – and comes with accessories too.

TOTY 2011 Award winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on Feb 12, 2011 in New York City. The exclusive line of Justin Bieber dolls and toys were launched at the end of September, along with an official website (www.justinbiebertoys.com), a Twitter feed (@JBieberToys) and a Facebook Page (Justin Bieber Toys).

Will it never end???
