Don’t forget to vote

SO in just over 24 hours, the residents of Hougang are going to cast their vote in the by-election. It was just a little over a year that the whole country was involved in the general elections.

Still, I couldn’t help but dedicate these songs to the people living in the Hougang constituency. Sure, there are people who would say that you shouldn’t mix music and politics, or sport and politics, or whatever. But I think that’s kind of … ah well.

Anyway here they are. First off, Tokyo Police Club’s Your English Is Good. If nothing else, for the opening line.

Next is Radiohead’s Electioneering. Yup. Basically, because Ed O’Brien’s got his Rickenbacker, and this was back when Jonny Greenwood still had his guitar. (haha)

And lastly, here’s a nice version of U2′s One Tree Hill. It’s got nothing to do with politics or whatever. I just put it in because I think this is one of the best songs from The Joshua Tree.

Time to rock the vote (vol. 5): No Surprises for this election?

So I don’t know about you, but I’ve already received my polling card.  Quite excited about it. Let’s face it, this is just about the most important invite you’re going to get in quite a while. Five years, minimum. Unless you didn’t register to be an elector. In which case, if you register in five weeks from now, you can get back on the list but depending on whether your constituency is being contested…

But anyway, was listening to Radiohead’s No Surprises a couple of days ago, and someone I know was saying how apt the song was to the current election vibe. So I looked up what Thom Yorke had to say in the song…

“A heart that’s full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won’t heal

You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don’t, they don’t speak for us
I’ll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

Halfway through the music video the glass bowl Thom Yorke's in started to get filled with water until it goes over his head.

This is my final fit, my final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please (let me out of here)”

By the way, this was how late we stayed in the office on Labour Day morning. Yeah, still have to do labour (haha, okay bad joke – although not as bad as the one about the mothers giving birth on 1 May. Now that’s really Labour Day…)

And here’s a shot of our election board – and who’s keeping track of who…

Less than a week to go…!

Hubbah for Hooba (and Muse)

SO HERE’S what happened: On Sunday, your Abang received news that Muse, world’s second greatest live band after Radiohead (IMHO anyway), would be in town next Feb.

Here's one for all you Muse fans
Here’s one for all you Muse fans

Naturally, I spent so much time telling everybody about it, I forgot to mention it here and in the paper.

Then just now, the good folk at LAMC Productions and NTUC annouced that Hoobastank will be here for a New Year’s Eve party called Party On! Singapore. So this time, I’m making you read it here first.

Now, I know all you detractors are going, “Oh no! Not that band who sang that boring song called The Reason that’s been played ad nauseum since its release years ago!”

I understand. I was once like that. But that was before I saw these guys kick out the jams at MTV Worldstage in Malaysia earlier this year. And now mine eyes have seen … well, not the glory, but at least I know they’re not as boring as detractors would have us think.

And I haven’t seen anyone who can get 15,000 people pogoing to the strains of Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbusters since, well, Ray Parker Jr. Would be interesting to see if they can create the same effect here.

Party On! Singapore happens Dec 31 at Downtown East, 8pm. Tickets on sale now at all Tickets.com outlets. Log on to http://www.tdc.sg or call 6296-2929 for bookings. Early bird ticket prices till Dec 3 at $70 ($55 for NTUC members). Standard tickets at $75 ($60 for NTUC members). At the door: $80 ($65 for NTUC members).
