“And so it begins…” ScreenSingapore Gala Premiere

Hey Film Fans..

The inaugural ScreenSingapore was off and running with the red-carpet for the opening film The Devil Inside Me and the Opening Gala Party last night.

Director Zhang Qi and actress Anya from the film, along with Mural director Gordon Chan and cast Yan Ni, Colin Chou, Liu Yan, Xie Nan and Bao Bei-Er all stomped the carpet, to er… some sort of fanfare. Perhaps being a little, ahem, less well-known, it seemed like all the screams were saved for event ambassador Zhang Ziyi. And boy did the fans lap up her up as she strutted down the carpet on the arm of Dennis Davidson, Chairman of DDA Consulting.

The six-million dollar (or maybe eight?) question though, was, why is Ms Zhang a ScreenSingapore ambassador? Still, none of her fans seemed to care that none of her films (past, present or future) were featured in the event.

Local celebs like Edmund Chen, Irene Ang, Adrian Pang and Chua Enlai were also on hand to add to the glitz, as well as Avatar producer Jon Landau with wife Julie.

Guest-of-Honour Singapore’s Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts, Yaacob Ibrahim said in a welcoming speech: ” I am confident that ScreenSingapore will serve as a valuable platform for business and creative talent to come together to discuss ideas to to propel the growth of Asian cinema.”

This kicks off the eight day film and trade event that includes Tom Hanks coming to town on the 11th June for the Asia-Pacific Premiere of his film Larry Crowne which will close the festivities.

Excited about ScreenSingapore-widely touted as the Cannes of the East? Let me know what you think.

Till then, always remember to Snap, Crackle and POPcorn!

” There is something about Carey…” Flick Chick’s chat with the ingenue Carey Mulligan in Cannes

TODAY EXCLUSIVE!!

There’s something about Carey. Really, there is. She’s that rare and alluring package of beauty, brains and talent that isn’t at all aware that she is in possession of the ultimate superstardom tri-fecta. And Flick Chick isn’t just saying it because the young Oscar nominee commented on how much she loved the dress I was wearing (thanks Carey!)

Flick Chick with the gorgeous and lovely Carey Mulligan

“It’s gorgeous and you look great! Where did you get it?” the luminous Ms Mulligan enquired almost shyly in that cool crisp English accent as she sat down for an interview with TODAY at the Hotel Du Cap. She was in Cannes to promote Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which world premiered at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival earlier this May.

It is this very un-pretentious, completely disarming nature of Carey Mulligan that warms you instantly towards her like an old school friend, and make you completely forget that she’s actually currently one of Tinseltown’s hottest, most sought-after commodities- a bonafide Hollywood rising “ IT” girl.

And she’s one of those rare few that actually deserve the kudos. After all, the 25 year old ingénue more than held her own as Winnie Gekko in Oliver Stone’s sequel to his critical and commercial 1987 hit Wall Street amongst a veteran cast comprising of Michael Douglas, Josh Brolin and Frank Langella. As the grown-up estranged daughter of 80s villain-hero slick corrupt banker Gordon Gekko (Douglas) who is engaged to new hotshot banker Jake ( played by real-life beau Shia LaBeouf) , she was the rose among the thorns in the male heavy cast and a classy breath of fresh air. She didn’t get a Best Actress Oscar nom for owning every scene in 2009’s An Education for nothin’… OK!

Flick Chick: So what was it like being (almost the only) girl in the big boys club?

Carey Mulligan: It was great. I was daunted by the whole thing, because of Oliver and his reputation (laughs). And just being in such a strong cast. It’s always the biggest budgeted American film I’ve ever been in… so it was nerve-wrecking. Also because my character was completely invented and I had such fears that she was going to be the token girlfriend… that sort of thing. But Oliver managed to tell both stories very well and to link them well.

Flick Chick: Are you a fan of the original?

Carey Mulligan: I … am… NOW! (laughs) I mean , I saw the original for the first time when I was 12, and it came out when I was 2… so it wasn’t a teenage film sort of film. I wasn’t really interested in films when I was growing up.

Flick Chick: Gasp…You didn’t?

Carey Mulligan:I mean, I liked going to the cinema to watch Jurassic Park, Titanic, and things like that… I wasn’t into these kind of films. But then I watched it before I met Oliver. And then Oliver wanted me to watch it again and again. He asked me to watch all of his films… hahahha! But he wanted me to watch it to sort of try and incorporated some of Michael’s characteristics and mannerisms. And some of the things he’s tried to do in the original film. And I tried to but really, she’s so far removed, the way my character is written. And she really never grew up with this man.. he’s been in prison. So that didn’t quite pan out in the end (laughs)

Flick Chick: So it must have been a whirlwind since the incredible success of An Education…

Carey Mulligan: Yes! It all happened so fast. I kind of thought it was going to be an Arthouse thing and play to a few cinemas in England. I never thought it was going to get a release in America. And then it happened. And the last 6 months running up to the Oscars…it all happened very fast. It just went by like that. But it was all good stuff! I was astonished and incredibly grateful. But it was bizarre, to be doing so much of something that isn’t your job, you know…

Flick Chick:So it was a sort of An Education in way?Did you learn anything since then about being thrown into the limelight?

Carey Mulligan: Yeah, I had never done any press at all until the film premiered in Sundance ( Film Festival) I had done one interview in England for a TV thing I did. So suddenly, to be doing lots and lots of interviews…wow. I think I learnt to stop swearing to journalists because it really upsets my Mum!

Flick Chick:Hahaha!

Carey Mulligan: (laughs) But no, I don’t think I’ve changed hugely personally, really. Just work has changed. And even then, it’s not to the degree you would imagine. Of course, it’s much easier to get the opportunity to meet people and express an interest (in films that you might want to do) but it’s not the case of getting an array of offers. I still have to audition for the jobs that I want. And I still don’t know what I am doing next.

Flick Chick: I cannot believe that! Do you think Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is going to be the game-changer for you in Hollywood?

Carey Mulligan: I don’t know! I was terrified coming here because I thought people were going to be like, “ Oh she was nice in An Education, but she should stick to teenage girls.” It’s really scary if you had something that was really successful to then follow it up and hope that people don’t rip you to pieces. So I was really nervous actually… I was nervous when my agent saw it, you know. Because I was so excited to work with Oliver but I was initially nervous before I said yes to the job just because at that point An Education wasn’t a big deal yet.

Flick Chick: You seem to be drawn to serious roles. Are you a serious person?

No not really! (laughs) I am just not very good at comedy (laughs). So I do dramatic stuff. And I find all that kind of work cathartic. I get a kind of a buzz out of doing drama.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is in cinemas now.

XOXO,

Your Flick Chick

“And the winner is…” The 63rd Cannes Film Festival Winners

Bon Soir Film Fans! (well..it’s Sunday night in the South of France at the moment just in case you’re confused )

Flick Chick has sadly said Au Revoir to the 63rd Cannes Film Festival… but not without nabbing tickets to walk the red carpet and catch the gala premiere of Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s ( the guy who gave us Tropical Malady) Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives/ Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat on Friday night , as well as late morning screening of Korea’s Hong Sangsoo’s HaHaHa. And guess what?

Apichatpong did South-east Asia loud and proud by taking home the top honours of the festival as his film was announced as the coveted Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) winner at the awards ceremony just a few hours ago while Hong Sangsoo brought smiles to Korea for winning the top prize at festival’s Un Certain Regard side bar.

My Gala premiere ticket for Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat

My Gala premiere ticket for Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat

Yes! Asia emerged as the top dog at the last day of the world’s most prestigious film festival!

Just to bring you guys up to speed, HaHaHa is a quirky film that revolves around an ongoing conversation between a Korean filmmaker and his slightly depressed good friend, as they trade stories about their recent summer-without ever knowing they were both interacting with the exact same group of people at the same time; while Apichaptong’s hypnotic trippy trance of a film traces the dreamlike final days of a man dying of kidney failure as the ghost of his dead wife as well as his long-lost son comes home to him.

The Grand Prize (or the first runner-up to everyone else) went to Xavier Beauvois’s thought-provoking religious powerhouse Of Gods and Men while Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s A Screaming Man took home the Jury (second-runner-up) Prize.

Academy Award winners Juliette Binoche and Javier Bardem who impressed in Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful respectively earned the top acting honors.

The Best Director prize went to Mathieu Amalric (who was last seen as the latest Bond baddie in Quantum of Solace) for On Tour, a story about a troupe of American burlesque strippers performing around France. And lighting struck twice as South Korea scored for the second time with the Best Screenplay award going to Lee Chang-dong for his quiet piece Poetry.

Unfortunately, Singapore’s very own Boo Junfeng lost out on the Camera d’Or (the prize for first-time filmmakers) to Mexico’s Michael Rowe who won for the romantic Ano Bisiesto/Leap Year).

Main Jury President Tim Burton revealed at the awards ceremony that “Each and every one of us has some favorites that didn’t make it,” while Kate Beckinsale joked that they even tried to invent more prizes.

For this Flick Chick who spent the entire festival juggling roundtables, press conferences, filing stories and choosing which films to watch and which to miss, there’s always going to be a few films I told myself I would definitely regret not having managed to catch. Thankfully, not this year.

Lucky me.

Here is the full list of winners:

Palme d’Or (Golden Palm): “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand)

Grand Prize: “Of Gods and Men” by Xavier Beauvois (France)

Jury Prize: “A Screaming Man” by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Chad)

“Water!Water!!!!”- BREAKING NEWS:Oscar nominated director Shekhar Kapur is making a movie in S’PORE!!!”

BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS!BREAKING NEWS!

Bonjour Film Fans!

On 13th May 2010, right after the ScreenSingapore press conference held at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, Oscar nominated director Shekhar Kapur told FLICK CHICK exclusively that his next film- Paani (Water), which addresses the global water crisis-will be partly filmed in Singapore!

BIG-UP for our little island!

“Oops.. I don’t think I’ve told the Singapore people that yet, ” the director of Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age told me with a laugh as he looked over his shoulder.

Photo of Shekhar Kapur and me at the Carlton Hotel

But thanks for telling me Mr Kapur! That is, of course, I accosted the poor man right after and asked him point-blank when he’s going to make a film in our little red dot.

So there you have it boys and girls.. Flick Chick’s first big ole scoop at the Cannes Film Festival. Of course, the man will  officially announce the film Paani  at the official Swarovski event on the 14th May  so I’m pretty chuffed at the one day heads-up!

The film which raises the question “ What happens when the world runs out of water?”  will start filming this November and, as he shared with me conspiratorially that roughly 30% of  Paani will be shot in Singapore.

Find out more in my TODAY EXCLUSIVE out on Monday 17th May edition of TODAY.

Till then, always remember to Snap, Crackle and PopCorn!

“Catch me if you Cannes!”-Flick Chick’s day before the start of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival!!

Bonjour Mes Amis!

It’s your Flick Chick at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, living the Lifestyles of the Soooo-Not-Rich and Not-Soooo-Famous.

It’s May 11th- the day before the BIG shindig (Festival de Cannes runs from May 12th- May 23rd 2010) and apart from trying my darndest to live up to the tres Français name my parents bestowed on me (Did you know that St Geneviève is the patron saint of Paris?) by impressing no one with my spattering of secondary school French, I’ve also been busy taking photos of everything in sight.

Hey, it’s all in the name of journalism ok. To document both my excitement, as well as show you what people who are not Russell Crowe /Cate Blanchett /Woody Allen do just before the madness of Cannes Film Fest descends. Now if you would indulge me…
