Good morning star shine, the Earth says hello! This is Erika Cleo, aka, The Intern, pledging undying allegiance to TODAY online. I’m terribly sorry to say that if you readers were expecting Genevieve, you will be very disappointed. Your favourite Flick Chick is currently someplace in Cannes, so you will just have to deal with me for now. I’ll try to make it less painful, I promise.
Anyhow, I thought you might like to know a little something about me – or you might not, but I’m going to tell you anyway – my favourite superhero of all time is…wait for it…SPIDER-MAN.
I’m not really feeling the red and blue spandex, but who can resist a building-scaling enigma? Not me, that’s for sure. So you can imagine that I was pretty bummed when I heard Tobey Maguire was going to retire from the series and relinquish his throne as the resident “friendly neighbourhood Spider-man”.
For those who don’t already know, Kirsten Dunst as well as the director for all 3 Spiderman flicks, Sam Raimi, both dropped out of the project when Sony Pictures proposed they do a teenaged version of the popular Marvel comic series. So I did the next best thing—I went ahead and Googled the potential candidates.
They have some pretty large shoes to fill— after all, Spidey is a legacy.
Possible Peter Parkers (because I like alliteration like that) that Sony Pictures are rumoured to have their eyes on:
Logan Lerman

A.k.a Percy Jackson. Yet another fresh-faced young thing; he would definitely make a good high-schooler, if not for the fact that he looks almost as if Zac Efron and Chace Crawford had a baby. Also, as a rule of thumb, I think that one should not appear in two superhero movies at the same time (read: Percy Jackson) —it’s just not very credible.
Chace Crawford

Ah yes, who can forget Gossip Girl? But alas, he’s far too studly to play an awkward teen when he’s virtually bursting with testosterone. Besides, all that pretty will be wasted under Spidey’s mask. If you can’t see his face, then what’s really the point of watching Chace Crawford?
Robert Pattinson

What, seriously? Is it even possible to play both a love-struck vampire and a love-struck spider superhero all at once? Talk about overkill. But if Sony Pictures are aiming for the teen market, then they’re probably going in the right direction. If Rob could just turn off the brood button and fit all that hair into Spidey’s mask, then I say Sony will have hit the gold mine.
Who I Have My Eyes On:
Patrick Fugit

He’s probably one of the most under-rtated actors of our generation, although he did land a supporting role as Evra Von in the 2009 release Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, alongside Josh Hutcherson (below). Also, his intense performance as a homosexual teen in Horsemen warrants applause, so do give the kid some credit. He’ll make a good teen Spidey too, if not for his preference for indie films
Josh Hutcherson

If you remember Josh Hutcherson in Little Manhattan, you’re kinda old. No I’m just kidding. But little Josh is all grown up now, and is easily the looker amongst the lot. So he wasn’t impressive as Steve, the blood-thirsty teen vampire (what is it with people and vampires these days?) in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, but I blame it on bad scripting. We could take a chance with this guy, IMHO.
Anton Yelchin

You guys are probably going, Yelchin who? Yelchin, the up-and-coming actor who gained some serious cred in films such as Charlie Bartlett, New York, I Love You, Startrek, and Terminator Salvation, that’s who. The only problem here is whether his slight frame is convincing enough to pull off a superhero. Well, I say there’s always the gym, and if that doesn’t work out, at least we all know that the adult Spidey wasn’t that much of a stud either.
So there we go, that’s my take, at least, on who should play our much-loved hero. What’s yours?
Till next time, this is Erika The Intern, signing out!
