Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista, who has, with great difficulty, spotted an unrecognizable Fann Wong. Yes, it’s true—Showbiz Sista walked right past her and didn’t even recognize her majesty the Queen of Caldecott. That’s because she looked like this:
No, it wasn’t a belated Halloween party, and no, hubby Chris wasn’t dressed as Hermione. Fann was filming for the drama Be Happy, scheduled to air on Channel 8 in March.
She plays “Big S”, a 38-year-old former Stage Four cancer patient who hosts a radio programme about societal issues. She meets a cancer patient played by Chen Hanwei who begins to think that she is his soul mate. “After she recovered from cancer, she felt she had been given the chance to live again, and was therefore meant to help people,” explained Fann about her character. “And sometimes she overdoes it. She’s so helpful that she drives people crazy. And it gets on Chen Hanwei’s nerves.”
Showbiz Sista says that this show has a couple of firsts for Fann. Firstly, it’s the first time Fann’s looked so unattractive. I mean, not that the geeky look isn’t in—it’s just, you know, that Phua Chu Kang wig. “This is the first time I’m wearing such a ‘different’ wig!” she said. “It’s very uncomfortable! It’s quite itchy when it gets hot. I already have a lot of hair, and it’s all inside (the wig). And to make me look darker, I have to wear foundation that’s two shades darker. So I’m quite worried about outdoor filming—it might get patchy when I sweat! And they’re trying to hide my fair skin, so I have to wear a lot of long-sleeved shirts and long pants. I’m going to—ack!—get heatstroke!”
“I posted a picture on my Weibo—it’s like Twitter—and a lot of people said that I look like Harry Potter,” said Fann with a giggle. “And Professor IQ, the Japanese cartoon.”
Yes, it’s a sweaty Harry Potter that will go on Fann’s illustrious resume. “I run around a lot. I have to save someone from a fire; I have to save someone from an accident; I have to run after a thief. I call myself a Superwoman because I have to run around a lot,” said Fann, punctuating her sentence with a snort of amusement.
That brings me to the other first: It’s the first time Showbiz Sista has heard Fann Wong snort.
