Oh, brother

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is May Seah, your Showbiz Sista, in not-so-sunny Los Angeles. That’s right, Tinseltown is having an unusually frigid hiatus from its usual balmy temperatures—and you know what else is rather frigid? Calista Flockhart.

Yes, Showbiz Sista hobnobbed with the Brothers And Sisters star today and found her at best tired and really, really in character as the ailing Kitty Walker, and at worst, just plain disinterested and cranky. She didn’t say anything mean, but the way she fielded questions was listless and uninspired and a bit duh, really.

rob calista

In contrast, her co-star Rob Lowe, who plays Kitty’s husband Senator MacCallister, was way more interesting—he did this cool thing where he pretended to be wearing a wig and sort of shifted his scalp around. Hoho.

“What’s it like to be SO pretty?” Showbiz Sista asked him. “If it weren’t coming from someone as pretty as you, I might think it was a backhanded compliment! With the emphasis on backhanded!” laughed Rob. “ I blame Alec Baldwin for all of it. Alec’s comment at the Emmy’s started this whole discourse on what I look like. I’m going to have to knock him silly with that.”

Then the lovely Calista poured cold water by tsk-ing disapprovingly and saying, “I work with this guy almost every day, and he doesn’t even think about it. It’s all about what’s inside and what he’s trying to do and how he’s acting. He doesn’t sit around and go ‘Oh, aren’t I pretty.’ He’s a good-looking guy, and makes me feel ugly, but I think it’s a non-issue for him.” Oh, pooh, pooh.

Thankfully, Rob saved the conversation with a witty, “It’s definitely a non-issue for my wife.”

For now, this is Showbiz Sista, signing out. Look out for more Brothers And Sisters stuff coming up in the paper! The latest season of Brothers And Sisters is available on-demand through SingTel mioTV’s Season Pass. Live long and pop corn!

Dasmond And The Aunties

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is May Seah, your Showbiz Sista, with the shocking news that Dasmond Koh is now fraternizing with aunties. Yes, it’s aunties galore in the new variety show that Dasmond hosts along with Quan Yifeng, Housewives Pte Ltd, which premieres October 5.

Is Dasmond the unsuspecting prey of heartland cougars? Does he prefer older women?

Dasmond 1

No, lah. He and Quan Yifeng  merely help them make the most of themselves. The programme assists housewives in starting their own small businesses such as a petsitting service, a marketing service and a party planning business, so they can use their free time to earn extra cash. You go, aunties!

housewives 2

“We saw a lot of different kinds of aunties, from the really down-to-earth type to the flamboyant type,” said Dasmond. “There are people who are really very shy, they dare not talk, they always whisper and you can’t get their voices down on tape, to those that can showcase whatever they want.” Well, it just goes to show that you can’t keep a good auntie down.

housewives 4

So, did the aunties think Dasmond was cute? Is he popular with the housewives? “I don’t think so!” Dasmond protested. “I think my followers should be tertiary students; youngsters. Because I used to be from radio. The aunties might think that I’m okay, lah!”

housewives 1

Making sure the aunties don’t rip Dasmond’s clothes to shreds is his close pal Yifeng. In their own time, they play badminton and go diving together, and talk about their problems—but things weren’t always this way. The first time Dasmond worked with Yifeng, “She was like, the don’t-know-how-to-handle type, because of her image. I was thinking I didn’t know how to handle her. She’s fast and furious! But she can really try to be compatible with whoever she’s working with so that I don’t outshine you and you don’t outshine me.” Guess Yifeng handles smoothly now.

Bonus Babes

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is May Seah, your Showbiz Sista, bringing you the best and most bounteous bits from Baby Bonus, the upcoming drama on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. It’s got big names like Tay Ping Hui, Felicia Chin, Jesseca Liu, Terence Cao, Xiang Yun, Lin Mei Jiao, Darren Lim and Zhu Hou Ren. Ooh, baby, baby.

 baby 3

Happy Family.

The venerable Zhu Hou Ren plays a family guy who longs to dandle a grandchild on his knee but isn’t indulged by his married son (Darren Lim) or his single daughter (Jesseca). One day he runs into his old flame (Xiang Yun) who’s now a struggling single mother to a wayward Ah Lian daughter who plays pool for a living (Felicia). Said Ah Lian daughter has a baby son, born out of wedlock, named Olympic (oh yeah, you heard right). She’s a terrible mother, and frequently leaves the tot in the care of her nerdy neighbour (Ping Hui). Sparks fly when someone has a crush on someone, someone thinks someone’s having an affair with someone, and Felicia tries to sell her son off.

 Baby 1

Felicia walked in holding the infant star, but she looked like she didn’t really know what to do with him, so Showbiz Sista is pretty sure that this role wasn’t much of a challenge for her to play. “I was a little scared of handling him at first,” Felicia said. “I feel like babies are fragile and I might crush them. At the audition, I was the only person who made him cry when I held him. I was sad and didn’t know what to do, but I learnt that I shouldn’t try too hard.” No maternal instincts were stimulated in the making of this drama—but it’s okay Felicia, you still have plenty of time before your clock starts ticking.

 baby 2

Ping Hui knows how to keep a babe happy. See, Felicia? Watch and learn.

It’s a different story with Jesseca, however. “The best part about this show was the baby,” she told Showbiz Sista. “He’s really cute. Filming is usually a long and boring process, but we got to play with him while we were waiting in between scenes, and everyone fought to feed him and play with him. And I looked forward to seeing him and missed him if I didn’t see him.” Aww… Kudos to the baby for scoring himself a hot aunt.

 baby 4

“Hey hot aunt, can I buy you a chocolate milk?”

Okay, so, Ping Hui plays the guy who likes Jesseca’s character and tries to give his all for her, but she likes Terence’s character better. “I always play guys with unrequited passions for girls. Just like in real life. I’ve asked Jesseca out a few times, but she keeps saying no,” Ping Hui joked. Hurhur…

Don’t blink, because this just in: Zhu Hou Ren has some good news for you. “This is a very special show,” he said. “Starting with this show, all drama serials will end on a Friday. You can have the weekend to rest in between serials!”

 baby 5

Man, that Zhu Hou Ren is hot… Ooo yeah…

It’s, like, ultimate

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! Since you all asked so very nicely, May Seah, your Showbiz Sista, is bringing you the latest on The Ultimatum. It’s the long-awaited blockbuster starring the two Queens of Caldecott, Zoe and Fann, together with leading manly-men Li Nanxing and Tay Ping Hui. And it’s on the telly now!

They\'re like Abba. But not.

The legendary pair of Zoe and Nanxing still have great chemistry, as you can tell from this exchange between them:

Nanxing: Working with Zoe again was great. It felt like The Unbeatables all over again. And she looked great in that outfit. She was wearing …

Zoe: The bikini?

Nanxing: The cheongsam.

Zoe: What? I was never in a cheongsam.

Nanxing: Oh, sorry, that must have been an extra then …

Zoe: What! You confused me with an extra?

Careful, Nanxing. That’s our Ah Jie you’re talking about. Finally, Li Nanxing comes back onscreen after a long hiatus, to play Zoe’s love interest. He’s not the only former star to come out of retirement for The Ultimatum. Check out the picture below.

\

Who’s that on the extreme right? Could it be? Yes, it is! Mr Pyramid Game, Benedict Goh! Long live nostalgia!

The Ultimatum is a classic swapped-at-birth story. Zoe Tay grows up in a wealthy household, while Fann Wong is raised in a poor one by an unloving pretend-mother who knows the truth but is forced to keep the secret of the swapped babies. If ever there was a tried-and-true recipe for drama, this is it.

We get it, Fann. You\'re taller. Can we move on?

Showbiz Sista thinks there’s been rather enough of Fann and Zoe saying how refreshing it is to be working together again, so we’re going to focus on the host of other big names in The Ultimatum. Get over their “rivalry” already, stargazers — there’s room enough for two thrones on The Hill!

Celebrities get to touch each other for free.

Tay Ping Hui plays Zoe’s adopted brother, who also has a criminal history of thieving. Hot on his naughty heels is Interpol agent Terence Cao. Both vie for Fann’s affections, but also gain respect for each other. “Getting to work with Terence was the best thing about this show,” said Ping Hui. “It gave us the opportunity to explore relationships between two men. I really like that kind of show.”

Well, he told Showbiz Sista he would like to take on a project about male platonic relationships in an interview last year, so it looks like his wish came true.

Zhang Zhen Huan has a man crush.

Felicia Chin gets her cross-dressing groove on for her role as Ping Hui’s sister, who pretends to be a guy so that she can be a disciple of the God of Gamblers (Li Nanxing). Yes, of course he’s a male chauvinist pig — how else does one become a gambling god? “I did bind my chest,” she confessed. “It was quite flat!”

If you need proof that her getup was convincing, see the following amusing anecdote: “We were filming at a Zion Road hawker centre, and I scared an auntie when I went to the loo. She was coming out as I was going in. She said, ‘Hey, this is the ladies!’ I said, ‘Auntie, I’m a girl.’ But she continued to stare after me.” LOL.

It\'s not Clay Aiken.

Dressed as a boy, Felicia gets a day job at a bakery, where the head pastry chef develops a crush on her that makes him question his sexuality. Zhang Zhen Huan, who plays the Prince of Cakes, told Showbiz Sista: “When I go past Bread Talk, all the cakes look very pretty.” He had to pick up some baking skills in order to look convincing on screen, though. “Previously, I couldn’t even cook an egg. Now, I think, if I had a recipe and all the equipment I needed, I might, perhaps, maybe, just possibly, be able to make a somewhat-edible cake.”

Elvin\'s a bad, bad boy. With Zoe\'s help.

Elvin Ng plays Zoe’s brother — but there’ll be no wide-eyed innocence from him this time. Thank goodness, Showbiz Sista says! “It’s the first time I’m playing a bad guy,” announced Elvin. “Zoe gave me tips on how to be bad-er. I needed them because, after all, I am quite naïve and simple.”

At least the guy has a sense of humour about himself. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

You’re invited to the Ball

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! May Seah, your Showbiz Sista, is busy getting even more tangled up in the Peranakan spirit. This weekend’s staging of the musical extravaganza, The Peranakan Ball, promises to overwhelm your senses with all of your favourite Nyonya hijinks.

All Nonya, all night.

Inspired by the popularity of The Little Nyonya, MediaCorp VizPro presents The Peranakan Ball, a musical play that recreates the emotional highlights of the drama serial as it follows the exploits of a downtrodden Nyonya servant girl in a wealthy Peranakan household who finds the man of her dreams.

Directed by Goh Boon Teck (Titoudau), the musical is headlined by Jeanette Aw and Dai Yang Tian, together with a host of veteran MediaCorp artistes including Xiang Yun, Ann Kok, and Rayson Tan, as well as Project Superstar’s Chen Diya and Carrie Yeo. Guest star Olivia Ong will perform the Little Nyonya theme song Ru Yan.

Nonyas just wanna have fun.

“It’s a Peranakan-inspired musical,” Jeanette Aw told Showbiz Sista. She plays main character Bee Tin, who’s something of a kebaya-wearing Cinderella. In case you’re wondering, “It doesn’t pick up on any of the storyline in the drama. It’s a newly created story. The only character that has been preserved is Yue Niang, who is played by Xiang Yun. They preserved her name, but her role is quite different — it’s not going to be how she looked like on TV.”

Jeanette’s last singing experience was when she was part of her primary school choir — but she’s gamely taking on the challenge. “I think it’s really nice to be able to do stage again. I was in Theatre Studies when I was in uni. I’m looking forward to it because I still love stage, but at the same time I’m quite nervous about it because it’s been such a long time. I’ve been away from stage performances for like eight years. Dancing is quite all right, because I’ve got my foundation in dance. To add in singing — it’s going to be more challenge added to it.”

Xiang Yun gets to sing outside of her bathroom.

Xiang Yun, who reprises her role as a mature Yue Niang, chirpily enthused: “I’ve got lots of scenes and singing. It’s a very happy Nyonya show. It’s very cute! I organise a party, at which my friend the Chor Chor will choose a daughter in law. Jeanette plays my goddaughter.”

It’s been many years since she exercised her vocal chords in Liang Wen Fu’s musical play December Rain. “I can sing in the bathroom. But on the stage there’s a lot of pressure!” she laughed. “I’m really anxious so I keep listening to the songs. The songs have been translated from Malay. They’re very interesting and really nice to listen to and they make you really happy.” Oh, and “Chor Chor is played by a guy!”

Dude looks like a Nonya.

That’s right. Theatre actor Darius Tan (Beauty World) plays the great-grandmother of Dai Yang Tian, who’s in need of a wife. “When Boon Teck (director Goh Boon Teck) called me up and said ‘We’re going to do this musical called The Peranakan Ball,’ I was like, ‘Ha ha ha! The Little Nyonya – The Musical?’ Then there was a silence. It was true!” Darius laughed.

Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

The Peranakan Ball, May 16 at 8pm at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Tickets at $58 to $118 from Sistic.
