The cast of The Oath swears in

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista getting a taste of Channel 8’s own medicine. The latest 9pm drama, The Oath, from production company Wawa Pictures, is about doctors.

Christopher Lee stars as a disgraced doctor who becomes a Chinese medicine practitioner, clashing in styles with mainstream doctors such as Jesseca Liu’s character.

Chris said: “The image of a Chinese medicine practitioner is elderly, decent and square. But this role isn’t written that way. He’s a modern Chinese doctor. Imagine if the role was very ‘toot’ – nothing special; been seen before. This is a very fresh take. How do you present that and deliver that feeling? I think it’s a lot of fun.”

Ix plays a doctor who is Chris’s longtime frenemy.

Ix said: “I’ve been away for 3 to 4 years and it so happened that I was available to take on this project. I thought since I’m free and the role was a challenging one, why not. I have been in Beijing for the last two and a half years and acting there, which is why the cast keeps teasing me about my Beijing accent.”

Ann, who also stars in Kampong Ties, plays a lawyer who fights cases on behalf of the hospital.

Ann said: “I’m excited, yet nervous about having two shows concurrently. Luckily, it’s two very different shows set in very different eras, and the characters are different as well. I hope the audience will be able to see the difference in how I’ve portrayed each character, (but) I’m afraid they’ll get tired of seeing me!”

The Oath also stars Zhang Zhen Huan, Richard Low, Chen Shu Cheng and Kate Pang.

Catch The Oath starting Tuesday (Oct 25) at 9pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

Rui En’s in some hot tofu

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista on the trail of one of the busiest girls in show business: Rui En.

Recently spotted ditzing it up in A Tale Of Two Cities, Rui En returns to the 9pm slot on Channel 8 with The In-Laws, or Mapo Tofu in Chinese. She plays a mild-mannered miss who, upon being betrayed by boyfriend Terence Cao, decides to marry Pierre Png. Marrying into Pierre’s family, however, might just be the worst idea ever: She now has to deal with an overbearing mother-in-law (played by Hong Kong’s Louise Lee) and a scheming sister-in-law (played by Cynthia Koh, who is – need you ask?– married to Darren Lim, Pierre’s brother).

Also starring Richard Low as Rui En’s father, Cavin Soh as her brother, Belinda Lee (playing a cougar) as Pierre’s and Darren’s aunt, and May Phua as Terence’s other girlfriend.

Said Rui En, “This character is very different from what I’m used to. I always get strong, independent roles. This character is weak and easily bullied – she’s very different from me. So I tried playing with my voice for the first time. My voice is rather low, so I pitched it higher.” Evidently, this worked: “I never knew I could be so gentle!”

Agreed Cynthia, “Yeah, on the first day of filming, I told her that I had never seen her look so lackluster!”

Well, maybe it’s because of the abuse poor Rui En has to suffer at the hands of Terence. He joked, “For some reason, two women are in love with me. But I play a really bad guy. Bullying women is actually a lot of fun!”

Catch The In-Laws starting Tuesday (April 12) on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

Fann Wong goes to the movies

Hellooo out there fellow Star Gazers! It’s Showbiz Sista’s Little Helper, Kat (I stole Phin’s log-in ID), here again to update you about a certain local film by the name of Happy Go Lucky, or Fu Xing Dao.

Starring Caldecott sweetheart Fann Wong, funny lady Patricia Mok, and veteran Channel 8 actor Richard Low, Happy Go Lucky is a family comedy revolving around the exploits of hardcore gambler Hock Lee Poh (Low), his indulgent elder daughter (Mok), and her supposedly unlucky little sis (Wong).

Yep, that’s right. Fann, who in reality is pushing 40, plays a wide-eyed teenaged girl – and manages to pull it off without anyone chuckling rudely. And no wonder – the star showed up with hubby Christopher Lee at the premiere of Happy Go Lucky at The Cathay looking more youthful than ever.

Guess love really is the best anti-aging formula for a woman. The same formula, it seems, does strange things to a man’s hair.

Chris' hair was, as he discovered after he'd washed it, dry clean only.

It’s like a cross between the end of a poodle’s tail and Samuel L Jackson’s jheri curls in Pulp Fiction. Or maybe it was just REALLY humid outside. We love you Chris, but you’ve gotta say no to the ’fro.

Fann checks out Chris' hair and is suddenly paranoid that the evil humidity will get her too.

Meanwhile, a very petite Zebra had to die for a good cause: Patricia’s feet. A safari is not a mall, sweetie.

When they were done posing and preening for the cameras, the cast and crew of Happy Go Lucky got ready for the cake-cutting ceremony of the 5-kg cake Polar had prepared in honour of the movie.

Spotted hanging back and chatting with members of the press were the other newlyweds Michelle Chia and Shaun Chen, who had turned up to show their support for the event.

I approached Michelle and asked her how she had spent the new year season. Her reply was short, sweet, and succinct.

Also spotted at the event: Li Nanxing, who knows a thing or two about gambling from his Unbeatables days. The dude does not age. Maybe it’s the air up on the Caldecott hill.

Chris would like to warn you about the killer humidity though.

Happy Go Lucky opens in cinemas March 4.

Ah Jie Ah Choo! Poor Fann Wong has the H1N1 flu!

Hey! Flick Chick here in place of Showbiz Sista! Just thought you star-gazers might like to know the latest news. Looks like the H1N1 knows no bounds and has spread to Caldecott Hill! Poor Fann Wong has just been diagnosed with dreaded H1N1 Flu and will be on medical leave for 10 days!

Looks like Fann and Chris will have to lay off the lip-locking for the time being...

The star of the local family comedy feature film Happy Go Lucky, co-starring Richard Low, Patricia Mok and Marcus Chin, was conspiciously missing from the first day shoot ceremony held this morning at Kuan Im Tng Temple in Joo Chiat. Wong’s manager revealed the reason for her absence at the event: She has H1N1.

But fear not Fann-atics… the shoot for the movie will still proceed.  Director Harry Yap said, “In film production, we always anticipate changes. We just have to reschedule the affected shoot and hope that Fann will get well soon.”
Meanwhile, other celebs have given their two cents’ worth about the golden girl’s predicament.
Chua Enlai: “I hope she’s okay and gets well soon. I’m sure the production people are pulling their hair. Oh, maybe she can be spokesperson for some hospital after this.”
Adrian Pang: “ So it seems no one is spared, not even the royalty. I spoke to a couple of people who had the H1N1 vaccine. It’s a sensible precaution, all things considered, but they did say there were side effects.”
“But you know, after the initial hysteria of H1N1 seemed to subside, we seemed to collectively moved on to other things, like the recession, which is just very Singaporean! We like to jump on the next thing that comes along. But I guess we’re NOT of the woods. But panicking is the last thing we should all do. We should just continue to be vigilant. Take care of ourselves and our families.”
Vernetta Lopez: “Does this mean Christopher Lee is on quarantine? Does this mean they’ll have to take his picture off the wall in Ion Orchard? But seriously, I hope she’s okay. I think people need to be reminded to be vigilant, just a little reminder to get people to practice good hygiene again. Anybody can get this. I hope she gets better real soon. Nobody likes to be ill like that.”

Happy Go Lucky is set to be released in March 2010.
