Venture Beyond with Jeanette Aw

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista, investigating the Truth that is Out There with Jeanette Aw and the rest of the cast of Beyond!

Beyond is the new Channel 8 drama that will premiere on Dec 24. It’s the first proper special-effects, sci-fi style show that’s come along in years. The footage, which was shot in Singapore, was even sent off to Moscow for the addition of the special effects.

Basically, Jeanette plays a girl with special powers: She sees people as they really are. This X-ray vision isn’t always a good thing, as she somehow manages to see Rayson Tan with no clothes on.

Li Nanxing stars as a private investigator in search of his missing fiancee (played by Pamelyn Chee). Together, the two track missing persons through portals, wormholes and dimensions they never knew existed.

Pierre Png stars as a psychiatrist who falls for Jeanette and Xiang Yun plays Jeanette’s mother. Beyond also stars Shaun Chen and Jerry Yeo.

How does Jeanette feel about venturing into The Great Beyond? Does she believe in parallel universes? What superpower would she like to have? And what’s with those glasses? Showbiz Sista will let her tell you in her own words!

Catch Beyond starting Dec 24 at 9pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 8. Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!

Chinese Drama hits the big 3-0!

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! Naturally, your Showbiz Sista was hanging out backstage at Sunday night’s celebration of Channel 8′s three decades of productivity: The 30th Drama Anniversary Show. Here are some of the famous and beautiful people I ran into.

Quan Yifeng, Sharon Au and Hong Huifang in character as the proverbial “fans”

Yvonne Lim has got that fresh-out-of-the shower look thanks to Diane von Furstenberg

Desmond Tan is a fan of textures in Gucci with Cartier jewellery

Top to toe Martin Margiela for H&M shaves years off our dear Pan Ling Ling

Ya Hui is a little firecracker in a mini red frock by local designer Zen Chi

Ian Fang is also in Martin Margiela for H&M (‘cept fo’ the shoes, man)

Where there’s Ian, there’s usually Edwin Goh – kinda like an irresistible two-for-one deal

Kate Pang is svelte and pretty in a neon Keith Png gown

It’s well-loved veteran Chen Mei Guang!

Pierre Png keeps it sleek and simple

Olivia Ong is elegant in a scarlet Acme dress

Adeline Lim in costume for her dance number

Andie Chen in an outfit by local designer Depression — the clothes, not the facial expression

It was not easy, but just because Showbiz Sista loves all of her Stargazers so much, I managed to procure, with infinite difficulty (okay, so I just asked nicely), this gem of a photo, which is so cool, it will make you… er… well, just take a look for yourself:

Yes! It’s that blast-from-the-past photo from that photo album in Pillow Talk! Get a load of yesteryear’s — and today’s — hotties Xiang Yun and Zhu Hou Ren!!!!!!

Told you it was gold.

Dinner with the Pillow Talk stars

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista turned food blogger for today, together with the stars of Pillow Talk, which is now airing on Channel 8!

“An Intimate Evening With The Stars Of Pillow Talk” was a special first-of-its-kind, ticketed event that was held last night at the award-winning restaurant My Humble House, where 80 lucky fans got to sit down to a sumptuous seven-course dinner with Joanne Peh, Michelle Chia, Xiang Yun, Thomas Ong and Pierre Png.

The first course was “Oyster in two ways”  — chilled with onion sorbet and caviar, and baked with cheese — paired with Champagne.

Here’s Xiang Yun enjoying the second course, “Braised fish maw and cabbage heart in thick chicken broth served in young coconut”. “Soup is good for the skin,” she enthused. “Do you like soup too? I often do pork rib soup with wai san. I pop it in my double-boiler and have it with some soy sauce and rice when I get home after a busy day.”

After that came “Kagoshima Wagyu beef with honey mustard sauce served with asparagus”, paired with a lovely red.

Michelle tucking into the next course, “Baked cod with crushed almonds served with garlic mousse”. She was happy that at each table she’d spent time at, she had managed to discuss a bunch of different topics with her fans.

Here’s Pierre sharing a picture and some “Shanghai-style rice wrapped in lotus leaf served with braised whole abalone” with a fan. “I think this is great,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to really interact with fans.”

Joanne rounds off a yummy meal with dessert — “Deep-fried banana and red bean in filo pastry served with straberries and chocolate sauce paired with ginseng pear” – which, yes, she actually eats! How does she stay so svelte! Joanne told us that ten of her fan club members had gotten a table and were “very enthusiastic” in their support. Indeed, Showbiz Sista heard a lot of noise coming from that table, including a birthday song for Joanne, whose special day is coming up on April 25.

What do you think, stargazers — would you like to dine with the stars, too?

It takes two to tango: Xiang Yun and Zhu Hou Ren!

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! This is your Showbiz Sista with a real doozy for you stargazers today. We got front-row tickets to a dance class specially conducted for hot mama Xiang Yun and silver fox Zhu Hou Ren.

The acclaimed veteran actors were getting into character for the drama Pillow Talk, which began filming recently and will air in April. Pillow Talk is a spin-off of 2007’s Mars Vs Venus and takes up the topic of marriage, married life, and marital issues. Joanne Peh and Pierre Png also star as a newly-hitched couple.

Because Hou Ren plays a dance instructor and Xiang Yun his student, the pair is being put through the paces by professional coaches Richard Tang and Sephine Tan. This was only their second lesson – and the tango and the rumba are no easy tasks for rank beginners.

Check out their nifty moves.
