I find many professional photographers very defensive when asked about their craft.

Perhaps they feel threatened now that the technology is so good that average Joe can take as good pictures as the professional and has the patience to wait for the moment

Technology is a great equaliser.

Honestly for me, there's always a stark contrast between a photojournalist and a wedding / portrait / "commercial" photographer. In the former, I always envision it to be right at the moment and there's always no way for you to tell the subjects "Ok, maybe could you lower your chin and tilt it left just half an inch" and I believe it's something all (or maybe not 100%) photographers aspire to be in; hobby and work together.

But in which ever camp, its sole purpose is to record a moment in time for a person or event without an audible voice.

Dear Mr. Tan,

Nice read on the column, and I couldn\'t agree more. Photojournalists document (like any other journalist) the events that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. The importance of the issue easily overrides any individualistic intentions of the photographer.

I\'m looking forward to seeing your “In Bali with Magnum” gallery! :)
