Telcos now offering iPad mini and 4th gen iPad with WiFi + Cellular

SINGAPORE – Telcos M1, StarHub and SingTel have announced that they will be offering the iPad mini and 4th gen iPad with WiFi and Cellular from today. Launched this morning at M1 Shops in Paragon and 313@Somerset, SingTel shops at Comcentre, Tampines Mall and Jurong Point, and at all StarHub shops, this marks the official launch of the new cellular enabled iPad – which means you get 4G LTE access on top of the usual WiFi connectivity provided in the WiFi only iPads.

The three telcos have previously only offered the 3G versions of the 3rd gen iPad (the new iPad), and did not participate in the launch of the WiFi only iPad mini and 4th gen iPad.
All telcos will be selling the iPad mini and 4th gen iPad with WiFi + Cellular together with post-paid plans, however, StarHub is also offering the devices without a contract for pre-paid users.
Separately, local Apple reseller Epicentre and the Apple online store are also launching the cellular versions today, but Epicentre is only featuring the iPad mini on its website.

SingTel to enhance 3G network by early 2013

Faced with comments about the poor 3G coverage in shopping malls and other locations, including one Facebook post that has had almost 20,000 likes and 1,500 comments so far, telco SingTel has promised to improve its 3G network islandwide by early 2013.

In a post on its website, SingTel gave an indication to the public on how its 3G capacity expansion will rollout over the end of this year and early next year, adding that in the past three months it has already enhanced the network at “40 residential sites, 183 public buildings (malls, commercial, hotels) and 7 places of interests”. Two malls, Plaza Singapura and Causeway Point, have already had their capacities improved.

SingTel has also said that it is adding more than 100 new base station sites island wide, and is also upgrading all 3G network sites to “offer download speeds of up to 42Mbps by early 2013″, on top of “doubling the traffic handling capacity at all 3G sites within the next 3-6 months”.

StarHub had previously announced the switching on of its advanced DC-HSPA+ mobile network  on Sept 19, which aimed to double  current 3G download speeds. Mr Lim Eng Huat, Vice President of Mobile Network Engineering, StarHub, said that “StarHub is committed to providing mobile services of a consistently acceptable level as we continue to enhance our nationwide mobile network to serve our customers better. Since mid-September 2012, we have enhanced our 3G network to offer customers improved download speeds of up to 42 Mbps. We also continue to work closely with the relevant authorities as well as residential and commercial building owners to improve in-building mobile reception. These are in addition to our steady expansion of our 4G network which is scheduled to cover the whole island by 2013. Our network enhancements aim to provide our customers with a consistent, high-speed mobile broadband experience, both outdoors and indoors, as well as in most of the underground MRT tunnels and stations.”

In response, M1 has said that their ”networks are fully integrated”, adding that their overall network capacity was expanded with the launch of their nationwide 4G network. ”We pro-actively manage our network expansion based on projected usage and it’s an ongoing process”.
