A safety net for Singapore sports?

Posted at 9:03 pm under Uncategorized

Should there be a safety net, like a reserve, for Singapore sports?
That was one of the thoughts that raced through my mind this past week as the topic of the deepening global financial crisis developed.
In recent years, Singapore has invested heavily in sports, and by 2010, the Government would have pumped as much as $800 million into developing sports here.

We’re already seeing some results, such as Singapore’s first Olympic medal in 48 years, playing host to major sporting events like the 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, and in two years’ time, the first Youth Olympic Games, and not forgetting the completion of the Sports Hub in a few years’ time.

There are also many other exciting projects and proposals in the pipeline.

We are entering exciting times for Singapore sport.

But Singapore, being a very open economy and society, is highly susceptible to what happens elsewhere in the world, and it makes sense to have some form of back up or insurance that Singapore sports can fall back on, just in case something happens, especially as we’ve invested so much in it.
