The dream of owning one’s home is a universal dream it seems – albeit an elusive and tricky one. To buy? Or to rent? To jump in now, or to wait?

With property prices seemingly going inexorably up, amid talk of unit sizes going down, TODAY asks some Singaporeans whether they think property is still a good buy.

We also checked out two property launches in Pasir Ris to see what the market mood was – the executive condominium (EC) project, Watercolours, on Pasir Ris Avenue 4, and Pasir Ris One, a Design, Build and Sell Scheme (DBSS) development.

Cab driver William Kok took this video at 9.50am from the dashboard camera of his cab this morning, after a taxi burst into flames close to the entrance of the CTE tunnel at Cavenagh Road, engulfing drivers in thick black smoke.

The taxi driver escaped unharmed and the burning cab had no passenger.

The SCDF quenched the blaze within 15 mins of arrival and the CTE tunnel was closed, being eventually reopened at approximately 12.45pm, although during that time, traffic became reportedly backed up as far away as the CTE junction on Braddell Road.

The British Pathe newsreel archive has just uploaded “Paneful Business”, a newsreel about window cleaners working on the Empire State Building in 1938. The iconic 102-storey skyscraper has 6500 windows, which were cleaned by attaching a harness onto ‘eye bolts’ aside each window.

Just in case you think the process is old-fashioned, here’s New York window cleaner Patrick Shields using the same method to clean a pre-war building, in 2012.

Caine Monroy is a 9-year old boy living in Los Angeles who spent his summer holiday building an elaborate DIY cardboard arcade in his dad’s used auto parts store.

Caine dreamed of the day he would have lots of customers to visit his arcade, and he spent months preparing everything, perfecting the game design, making displays for the prizes, designing elaborate security systems, and hand labeling paper-lunch-gift-bags.

However, his dad’s autoparts store (located in an industrial part of East LA) gets almost zero foot traffic, so Caine’s chances of getting a customer were very small, and the few walk in customers that came through were always in too much of a hurry to get their auto part, to play Caine’s Arcade.

But Caine never gave up.

An undersea earthquake of an estimated 8.7 magnitude struck today just after 2.30pm (Indonesia time) at a depth of 33 km, 431 km southwest of Banda Aceh on the island of Sumatra.

An Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch was put in place immediately following the quake.

Tremors were felt as far away as Singapore – MediaCorp, the National Environment Agency and the Police said they received calls from the public regarding the tremors.

Several callers said they felt the tremors at Marine Parade, Beach Road, Bukit Panjang, Bendemeer Road, Farrer Road and Whampoa Road.
